Abstract: This study investigates the effects of turbulent currents on the near-field trajectory and dilution of buoyant jets. Turbulent current was produced by towing a vertical grid in front of buoyant jets in a laboratory flume. Trajectory and concentration distribution of the buoyant jets were measured for horizontal discharge single port diffuser. It was found the influence of turbulence intensity on jet trajectory is insignificant, but the dilution increases with increasing turbulence intensity. This indicates that turbulent current can enhance the near-field mixing of buoyant jets. Therefore, the effects of ambient turbulence need to be taken into consideration in the design of ocean disposal of wastewater.
