Abstract: This paper presents the results from a preliminary experimental investigation into a buoyant discharge with negligible initial momentum in a weak crossflow. The trajectory data confirm the 3/4 slope of the advected plume trajectory and are in good agreement with CORMIX1 model predictions. The predictions of three models are discussed in this study (CORMIX1, SP3D, JETLAG) and each gives different predictions of the advected plume trajectory. In addition, the experimental results obtained from previous experimental investigations exhibit significant differences. These differences have not yet been explained and there is an insufficient understanding of the weakly advected plume behaviour. A more detailed experimental investigation is planned, employing advanced experimental techniques.
