Abstract: A 1-D gravity current model has been used to determine how deep a soluticn of CO_2 dissolved in sea water could sink if released near the bottom of the ocean thermocline. The effort is motivated by the possibility that CO_2 might be sequestered in the ocean to mitigate the build-up of atmospheric CO_2. Results show that plume penetration depends most critically on bottom drag coefficient, initial plume concentration and CO_2 loading.
