Abstract: In the Rocky Mountains, there is strong awareness that land development should be compatible with the preservation, restoration, and protection of environmental resources. There has been an increasing focus on the riparian resources of mountain valleys (where much of the development occurs). Many Rocky Mountain towns and resorts are addressing protection of riparian areas with more scrutiny as they realize the multiple values of these areas. The protection measures typically involve the establishment of either fixed-width or variable-width stream buffers. This paper discusses the benefits of a variable-width approach over a fixed-width approach and presents a set of criteria used in determining the limits of a variable-width boundary.
