Abstract: About 100 years ago, the Wien River was regulated. The stone-covered river bed has approximately rectangular cross-sections with a small minor bed. Now the river should be rehabilitated. The tasks of the rehabilitation project are: flood protection, improvement of the ecosystem and the water quality, creation of a recreational area and redesign of the urban environment. The new river bed was developed utilizing hydraulic models both in the laboratory and in the Wien River. The bed of the “new” Wien River consists of one layer of big quarry stones, with the gaps between the stones being filled with finer substratum. The filling material serves as root zone for vegetation, development area for benthos, and as bed load in case of floods. The structural elements used are dispersed bottom sills, groynes, bed groynes, little islands and disturbance stones (stable big stones on the river bed). The present paper gives a general view of the project and outlines the methods and results.
