Abstract: The Central Valley of California is a good example of how new multiple-use pressures are causing major changes in the management of large water resources systems. Environmental quality objectives, such as the restoration and enhancement of fish resources, are demanding a larger share of water in areas where available resources are already fully allocated. New assessment and regulatory approaches are evolving to address this challenge.
