Abstract: Dam safety legislation is becoming more and more widespread. Although mathematical modelling of dam-break has advanced significantly in the last years, validation of models is a difficult problem. Software is generally validated against analytical solutions of De saint Venant equations or with laboratory experimental measurements. Both methods are very useful but are not fully stisfactory. This paper analyses the Malpasset dam-break as a real case. Malpasset dam-break occured in 1959 in the south of France. This dam was not EDF owned but the data are used to validate numerical tools for the flood wave simulation. The results of TELEMAC-2D are compared with the results of a 1/400 scale physical model built at LNH, and the results of a 1-dimensional computation.
