Abstract: MAC3D is a finite-volume numerical model for three-dimensional incompressible flow, which has been extended to compute the flow produced by bubble diffusers. An upward buoyant force, which is directly proportional to standard airflow rate but inversely proportional to local rise velocity and local depth, is imposed in the bubble plume. Eddy viscosity is computed using a mixing length that increases with distance from the bottom boundary. The extended model yields predicted velocities that exhibit fair agreement with observed values for both coarse and fine bubble diffusers submerged in a cylindrical tank.
