Abstract: The geometric model of Knight and Yu (1995) is tested against self-formed laboratory channel data of Babaeyan-Koopaei (1996). The results show that most of the predictions of the model for the top width and the centreline depth are within the range of ±10% of the observed values. In the flow equation used in the model the secondary flow effects have been ignored. Therefore, it does not predict the effects of secondary currents on shear stress distribution, which takes the form of an undulation of the bed shear stress in the transverse direction.
