Abstract: The Upper Sacramento River between Red Bluff and Colusa Landing is an unconfined, alluvial river undergoing meander migration. Channel revetment, or riprap, occurs in selected locations along the river. Additional revetment is being proposed in order to protect irrigation diversions. Installation of revetment impacts channel migration rates and patterns. An analytical model of channel migration is used to predict the influence, over the next 50 and 100 years, of riprap on river planform. Model analyses demonstrate that riprap leads to significant long-term changes, including decreases in channel length and sinuosity, and increases in channel slope. These changes may have important, unanticipated impacts on current and future land use activities.
