Abstract: An enormous volume of research has been conducted in the last decade investigating the hydraulics of overbank flows. Work has focused on conveyance characteristics, turbulent flow structure as well as aspects of unsteady flow in compound channels. In terms of conveyance, basic research has led towards the generation of design manuals, such as that of Ackers [Ref 1] for straight compound channels, and James and Wark [Ref 3] for meandering compound channels. In addition, numerical models have been developed by Wark et al [Ref 6] to predict the lateral distribution of depth-averaged velocity in a compound channel. The present thrust is towards sediment transport studies in compound channels for both uniform and mixed grain sizes. The work in this paper concerns mixed or poorly sorted grains in a compound channel.
