Abstract: The effect of bedload movement on the friction factor of both pipe flow and open-channel flow was studied experimentally. The data show that bedload movement increases the flow friction factor. The increase depends on the volumetric concentration of the bedload and the size of the particle, and it is attributed to the additional energy consumption associated with the collision of sediment particles as well as the particle horizontal acceleration-induced momentum extraction from the flow. An empirical equation is fitted to the experimental data.
