Abstract: Previously, fishways were designed to assist the migration of only commercial fish that were interrupted by transverse structures. However, recently, ecological system preservation has become one of functions of rivers to be considered in river management, and targets of fishways are no longer commercial fish but various species of fish. In this paper, the objective and evaluation criteria of fishways based on a new concept of river management are discussed, and the methodology of "ecological fishway" design is proposed. The "Instream Flow Incremental Methodology", which was derived for habitat evaluation, is refined and applied to the fishway which is not a comfortable habitat but an emergency path.
