Abstract: Based on the flume experiments, the principle of minimum energy consumption, the consideration of the effects of factors such as the fluctuation of flow, the composition of bed material, the roughness on river bed, the interaction between coarse particles and fine ones and the extent of armoring of the river bed, three patterns of incipient motion of bed material with a wide size distribution and corresponding formulas for their incipient velocities have been established. The results calculated from these formulas agree well with the experimental data.
