Abstract: River channels can often be described as two stage or compound channels with flow in the full channel cross section only occurring during the passage of flood waves. A reach of the River Main, Northern Ireland, has been reconstructed as a compact compound channel. The reach, shown in Fig 1, is 805 m long and has been surveyed at 9 cross sections. Flow gauging and steady flow studies by Martin and Myers have provided stage discharge curves, unit width discharge profiles and Manning’s n for bankfull flow, nbf, and floodplain flow, nfp. Diaphragm pressure transducers installed at section 14, upstream, and section 6, downstream, have provided synchronized water level hydrographs during the passage of flood waves.
