Abstract: Flow structures in compound channels have complicated three dimensional behaviors, and strong interaction between the main-channel and flood-plain flows is the most important feature of compound channel flows. Roughness of the flood-plain, and flow depth ratio between flood-plain and main-channel, may have significant effects on this interaction. In natural rivers, roughness effect from the vegetation on the flood plain reduces the flow velocity over the flood plain and further enhances the velocity difference between main-channel and flood plain flows. Due to this different flow velocities on both sides of the interface, strong eddies will be produced, which hamper the main flow.
