Abstract: Chute piers as used on spillways or in bottom outlet junctions induce rooster tails, i.e. shockwaves originating from either pier and corner and transversing the tailwater channel. The disturbance by shock is not a hydraulic problem except for the asymmetry of the approach flow to the energy dissipator, but a considerable increase of freaboard may yield an uneconomic chute design (Golze 1977).
