Abstract: Following a brief analysis of the relationships linking atmospheric circulation and precipitation, this report examines the most significant types of weather encountered in North Western Italy and, in relation to the catastrophic rainfall event which hit Piedmont on 5-6 November 1994, it shows that by means of the meteorological cartography supplied by the Bracknell (GB), Offenbach (D) and Rome (I) Centres it proved possible to obtain a reliable hydrometeorological forecast of this event from 36 to 48 hours in advance.
