Abstract: Computational hydraulic modelling is not a precise science although the fluid mechanics of open channel flow were formulated over 100 years ago as the St Venant Equations. The accuracy of computational models constructed using these equations is not known, neither is the amount of data required to deliver a given precision from the modelling. This paper draws together the results of several investigations into a framework for assessing the accuracy of flood level predictions. Some guidelines are suggested for the spacing of cross-sections and the need for good model calibration data is highlighted.
