Numerical and Physical Modeling of a Turbidity Current

Abstract: A suspension current is a special type of density current where the density difference is due to suspended particles other than the surrounding fluid. Currents due to sand or clay particles suspended in water are often termed turbidity currents. The turbidity current can be formed when river water with high sediment concentration enter a reservoir. The phenomena can be important for the distribution of sediments in the reservoir. To predict the effect of the turbidity current it is necessary to be able to model the process. This study describes a numerical model which has been used for simulating the turbidity current. This has been compared with results from a physical model study.
