Abstract: Tokyo Bay is one of the highly eutrophicated bays in Japan. It has an area of about 960 km^2, and the average depth is about 15m. The bay is stratified from late spring to early fall. Phytoplanktons proliferate in the upper layer; oxygen depletion and the formation of hydrogen sulfide occur in the lower layer. Moreover in the head of the bay, there are a lot of coastal trenches which were dredged more than 10m for the reclamation of the foreshore. The waters in the trenches are anoxic and contain high con- centration of hydrogen sulfde in summer.
