Abstract: The physical processes in an estuary are highly complex, as a consequence of the interaction between the tidal and river flows and of the confluence of lighter fresh water and heavier saline water. Salt water intrusion can lead to a salt wedge with associated density currents flowing opposite to the direction of the fresh water flow. Fine sediment transport in estuaries is often characterized by the formation of a turbidity maximum.
