Abstract: The paper provides useful condensed information on: a) the present status and perspectives of wave recording networks in the Medi erranean Sea and particularly off the Italian coasts; b) some results of statistical and spectral analyses of 5-year directional wave measurements from 8 deepwater stations, with special reference to wave climate variability and extreme sea-state characteristics; c) the analysis of long term wave climate change from 43-year shipboard observations over the whole Mediterranean Sea.
