Abstract: Nonlinear wave-wave interactions remain an outstanding issue of wave modelling especially in coastal waters. The associated growth and release of bound harmonic energy transforms the wave spectrum in ways that cannot yet be adequately predicted. A case where such release of higher frequency energy occurs is the diffraction of waves, where the wave height has to decrease in the shadow region. Therefore, it was thought worthwhile to investigate a relevant case with regular higher order waves, in order to gain some insight into the underlying mechanism of energy release in the form of free waves. In this respect we revisited some experiments performed in the past by the second author related to the diffraction of progressive Stokian waves by a semi-infinite screen.
