Abstract: The thin laminar boundary-layer solution for progressive Stokes edge waves on a uniformly sloping beach is examined experimentally. The measured mass transports are in good agreement with the theory qualitatively but not quanti- tatively. The discrepancies may be due to the failure of the theory near the shoreline, where the boundary layer is no longer thin.It is emphasized that the use of the mass-transport velocity at the outer edge of the boundary layer for modelling the formations of some nearshore topography is inappropriate, the detailed profile inside the boundary layer must be considered.
