Abstract: The last few years have seen a fundamental change in the way that coastal defences are planned in this country. The move towards more strategic long term planning has had a profound effect not only on institutional relationships but also on the techniques utilised to provide defences against coastal flooding and erosion. These changes have underlined the need for a greater understanding of natural processes and a consequential shift in the emphasis of much of our R&D.
