Abstract: Irregular impulsive wave forces on solid wall breakwater have been discussed in this study. With data sampling rate 2500Hz, this experiment measures total wave force acting on solid wall directly. The probability distributions of impulsive forces at wave breaking were analyzed with Log-normal, Gamma and Weibull function. Through Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit tests, it is indicated that log-normal function could present the probability distribution of impulsive wave forces very well. With log-normal distribution, impulsive forces were calculated to compare with the formulas of Mitsuyasu (1962), Goda (1974), Partenscky (1988) and Chien (1992). As a result, Chien's formula seems to underestimate the impulsive force for high steepness of breaking wave, while Mitsuyasu's and Goda's give the underestimations in the experimental range. On the other hand, Partenscky's shows the good agreement with the experimental analysis in this study.
