Abstract: Waves breaking against coastal structures create high impact pressures of short duration. A numerical analysis and recent experiments suggested that the wave impact pressures extend from the impact area down to the toe of the structure and along the sea bed. The sea bed pressures would be important for the uplift forces acting on breakwater caissons and for the forces acting on apron blocks. In order to verify this observed effect, it was decided to conduct experiments to measure horizontal wave impact pressures on a vertical wall and the related vertical pressures on an impermeable sea bed.
