Abstract: It is well known that the armor blocks used for the protection of coastal struc- tures such as breakwater settle into sand bed under stormy waves. In this study, we investigated the settlement phenomenon of a concrete block into sand bed un- der the cyclic loading of water pressure both experimentally and theoretically. The characteristics of the sand movement around the block are made clear by us- ing a visualization technique, and it is also shown that the cyclic seepage force which occurs around the concrete block plays an important role to the settlement phenomenon.
