Abstract: Rubble mound breakwaters of natural armour are very commonly used in ports and harbours around the globe to create tranquillity conditions within harbour areas. They are massive structures involving very heavy investments. This compels one to design the structure optimally i.e. safe structural and functional design at minimum cost. In order to obtain the optimum design, it is necessary to design the same for diffierent design wave heights, which are lesser than the long-term design wave height(or extreme design wave) of specified return period. For each such alternative section obtained, construction cost can be calculated easily, knowing the unit rates for each category of stones.
