Abstract: This paper cxamines the applicability of neural nelwork, modeled on the structure of human brain, to cvaluate the stability of artificial armour unit layer in front of caisson, in addition () the applicability of stability formulac of Van der Mccr (1988) for rock slopes and Kajima et al. (1993) for artificial amour units. Van der Meer's formula underestimates the stability number and O\ ercstimales the damage lcvel. Although the predicted stability numbers by Kajima ct al. 's formula agrcc well with the observations, the predicted damage levels become larger than the observations for large waves. A three-layered neural nctwork calibrated by experimental data of Kajima et al. can present the stability number and damage levcl very well.
