Abstract: Due to fast recent changes in the geopol1t1ca1 situation on the territory of the former USSR Russ1a has lost 50% sea and 15% river ports. In spite of relat1veiy low waterborne freight (10% of tota1 fre1ght traffic including 2% sea and 8% river operations) the water transport in Russia has no alternative. Water ways 1n the country are mainly where there are no other means of transportation or ship1ng is the cheapest operation.
