Abstract: In hydrological studies of low flows it is usually of interest the estimation of return period of events defined by minimum acceptable flows, and the estimation of the risk of failure of hydraulic works associated with such events. For simple events defined on independent, stationary processes, both the return period and the risk of failure can be readily calculated Nevertheless, time series of low flows usually present a high degree of dependence. In this paper, after a brief discussion on the definition of return period, a procedure to estimate return period and risk of failure of events connected with low flows in dependent processes is presented. Some results with annual low flow time series from central Chile are used in the comparisons.
