Abstract: The engineering of river water extraction requires attention to be paid to the disruption of both water flow and sediment movement in the river channel, and to the restriction of sediment ingress into the intake flow. At particular sites , additional factors can be expected to become influential, depending on the uses to which the river and its floodplain are put. Bed intakes have been developed with one such factor primarily in mind, namely the protection of fish habitat, with particular reference to salmon breeding. They have significant advantages also in presenting very little visual intrusion, and in excluding from the water drawn from the river all floating debris and surface level pollutants. This paper is concerned with the effect of the operation of bed intakes on sediment behaviour. It is important that this behaviour does not create features which threaten to impair the effectiveness of the intake or the stability of the river channel in its vicinity.
