Abstract: A Galerkin finite element formulation is developed for the numerical simulation of water flow and resuspension of sediment in the karstic basin I of Lake Banyoles caused by focussed groundwater. The code (RMA10) that solves the laterallyaveraged full two-dimensional governing flow equations with a zero-level treatment of the turbulent eddy viscosity and diffusion coefficients has been applied. For V-shaped basins in lake Banyoles the lutocline-a sharp interface between sediment and water-is expected to be found when the diffusion and advective upflowing and buoyancy fluxes balance one another. In such a balance, in order to simulate depth of lutocline, the relation of the hindered settling velocity to SSC has found to be an essential parameter as well as the diffusivity and eddy viscosity coefficients.
