Abstract: Groundwater resources in confined aquifers are very important for drinking water supply, because the covering impermeable layers are a natural protection against contaminations and guarantee a high water quality. But they can only be used economically if there is a sufficient recharge of groundwater. Because the recharge areas of confined aquifers usually are unknown the recharge of groundwater has to be proved by pressure head measurements of the confined aquifer. But the pressure head is also decisively influenced by the atmospheric pressure. Therefore first the impact of atmospheric pressure on the pressure head has to be determined for investigation of groundwater recharge. Its charac- teristic is the socalled "barometric efficiency" (BE). Analogous to this it is possible to determine the characteristic of the impact of precipitation on the pressure head like "precipitation efficiency" (PE) as a value for groudwater recharge.
