Abstract: The residence time of sewage flowing in waste stabilisation lagoon (WSL) systems driven by surface wind effects is estimated. This is carried out by employing a numerical model based on shallow water equations. From the analysis of results, it is found that the residence time is dramatically reduced from days, as estimated in the design stage of WSL, to just few hours. This confirms the existence of hydraulic short-circuiting and emphasises the significant wind effects on the hydraulic behaviour in WSL systems.
