Abstract: Seasonally high nutrient concentrations and light intensities often results in algal blooms. With the high concentration of these unicellular organisms that are present coagulation can be an important factor controlling the fate of the organisms and the organic matter that they have produced. Kinetic coagulation theories which have been applied to explain the nutrient and particle dynamics in lakes assume nutrient limitation of algal growth rate or constant algal production rates (O'Melia, 1985; Weilenmann et. al., 1989). An important conclusion of these studies has been that rates of algal losses to coagulation can be comparable to losses caused by zooplankton grazing.
