Abstract: Eutrophication process in lakes and reservoirs always accompanies some objectionable symptoms such as the water becomes green and turbid. This process becomes intensified when strong stratification of density occurs. Strong density gradients inhibit vertical mixing and make the water in the hypolimnion eutrophicate. Usually during summer period, the epilimnion water is separated from the underlying hypolimnion water by a strong thermocline. This thermocline prevents mixing of nutrients from the nutrient rich hypolimnion to the epilimnion and consequently, the nutrients in the epilimnion can be quickly depleted due to photosynthesis of phytoplankton. However, it is observed that in real lakes and reservoirs, the thermocline often lies in the photic zone, and a partof the nutrient rich hypolimnion water lies in the region where the light intensity is strong enough to permit photosynthesis. Thus this region is very suitable for the growth of phytoplankton and phytoplankton blooming here causes the lake or reservoir eutrophicate.
