Abstract: The perspective of small hydropower development in Greece faces several problems which refer to the profitability of the projects, the proper legislation, the limited capital and high interest rates, the lack of planning multipurpose hydraulic projects, the lack of availability of local turbine manufacturers, and the lack of support by the EEC programmes. In Greece a total of 100 sites for small hydropower are known, with expected installed capacity of 400 MW and annual energy production of 1500 GWh. The perspective by the year 2020 is the total installed capacity of small hydropower in Greece to reach the 250 MW.
