Data Assimilation and Parameter Estimation in a 2-D Advection-Dispersion Model

Abstract: An extended Kalman filter for the assimilation of observed data and parameter estimation, has been incorporated into the advection-dispersion module of a standard 2D hydrodynamic modeling tool. The Kalman filter is applied only to the dispersion part to ensure a constant influence of the filter, so avoiding expensive computational effort. Equations have been added to estimate unknown parameters in order to obtain a more accurate model. The filter performance has been tested and some application results are presented.
