Abstract: Results of model calculations are presented that demonstrate how spatial variability of hydraulic aquifer properties is influencing microbial activity. Concentration profiles along streamlines are similiar to profiles in onedimensional models, wheras concentration profiles integrated over the width of the two-dimensional domain indicate higher mixing. As longitudinal mixing processes dominates over transversal mixing a model of non-interacting stream pipes is suggested as alternative to two-dimensional stochastical modelling.
