Abstract: In conjunction with careful physical experiments the computer has proved itself to be a useful research tool in studying the micro-scale processes of sediment transport. Unfortunately, the limits of computer power and available time impose restrictions upon the level of detail which can be included in a model These restraints necessitate a certain degree of compromise and abstraction. Existing models (e.g. Wiberg & Smith [1985], Sekine & Kikkawa [1992], Jiang & Haff [1993]) achieve this by one or more of the following methods: constraining the geometry to two dimensions; using single grain sizes or discrete distributions; rebounding grains over artificial, unrepresentative bed surfaces, or only considering the motion of single grains. The purpose of this paper is to introduce an improved model to investigate the relationship between the three dimensional arrangement of multi-sized material in the bed and the transported bedload.
