Abstract: The runway of the northernmost airport (78oN) in the Norwegian town of Longyearbyen suffers from large deformations due to permafrost degradation, which have increased during the past warm years. These deformations influence operational safety and significantly increase the cost of maintenance. The fast and precise assessment of the runway’s current state and monitoring are vital for improvement and repairs. Laser scanning and mapping provide a new opportunity to quantify the visible deformations via 3D modelling, detect changes and determine the most sensitive places. In autumn 2017, we performed a runway survey with a RIEGL VZ-1000 laser scanner and obtained point clouds with several mm resolution. Processing in RiScan and ArcGIS yielded a raster surface, contour lines and a set of profiles. An algorithm and optimal procedure were developed based on experience.
