Abstract: Border ice formation and ice cover progression are two important river freeze-up processes. The development of border ice affects the formation and progression of ice cover. A few empirical and numerical studies addressed the possible formulations of border ice formation and growth. In this paper, these formulations are reviewed and unified. This unified formulation is applied to a two-dimensional hydro-thermal-dynamic river ice model and validated with observed field data in the upper St. Lawrence River. The ice cover progression is simulated together with the border ice formation based on the thermal regimes and dynamic transport of surface ice.
