Abstract: Many mechanisms of organic matter destruction have been examined mainly in a water column, in a homogeneous media under the restricted set of physical and chemical factors. Processes of destruction of organic matter of various geneses in water – ice contact zones are little studied. However, it has been shown that the formation of water quality under anthropogenic pollution of water ecosystems during freeze-up is stipulated by a combined effect of glaciochemical and microbiological processes. The paper describes specifics of volatile benzene derivatives and their formation in ice of the Amur and Songhua ecosystems after a technogenic accident in China (2005). Volatile substances (butylacetate, isopropylbenzene, o-, p-xylene) in the top and bottom ice layers were studied near the City of Khabarovsk in winter of 2010–2011. Some of these substances are found to be products of microbiological transformation of persistent organic substances, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons of various origins. Active application of modern chemical and biochemical research methods is proposed to mitigate ecologic risks and support sustainable regeneration of water communities in the Amur River during the river freezeup and ice break periods. Seasonal dynamics of successional processes and extreme conditions led to the formation of earlier unknown products in ice. This makes necessary the introduction of regional and seasonal parameters for monitoring hydrosphere pollution.
