Abstract: Water diversion channels are often used in northwestern arid regions of China. These diversion channels for water intake are located on the outer bank of river bends to minimize the bed sediment transport into the diversion channel. In the winter, surface ice booms are used to deflect the surface ice away from the diversion channel to avoid jamming its entrance. The design manual of the Ministry of Water Resources, China, provides guidelines on the layout of the ice booms. In this study, the DynaRICE model is used to analyze the flow and ice transport patterns and the appropriate layout of surface ice booms. The study showed that with an appropriate design placing ice booms upstream of the diversion channel can prevent ice from entering the intake. However, the ice can accumulate immediately downstream of the diversion channel leading to the blockage of its entrance. Another boom downstream of the intake is needed. The study shows that a numerical model such as the DynaRICE can be used to optimize the layout of ice booms for preventing the surface ice discharge from entering the diversion channel.
