Abstract: Xiaolangdi reservoir is located at the outlet of the last gorge section in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, about 130 km downstream of Sanmenxia hydraulic complex, with total storage capacity of 12.65 billion m3, and design storage capacity of 2 billon m3 for ice flood prevention, it plays an important role in both flood and ice flood prevention for the lower Yellow River. Xiaolangdi reservoir started to store water on October 25,1999, and put into official operation for ice flood prevention in the winter of 2000/2001. For water regulation ability enhanced and water temperature rose after the operation of Xiaolangdi reservoir, some new characteristics of ice conditions appear in the lower Yellow River, as follows: the dates of freeze-up and break-up became earlier, both freeze-up period and freeze-up length shortened, total ice volume reduced, and ice flood calamity relieved further.
