Abstract: This paper considers determination of local ice conditions for designing an offshore wind turbine. The analysis is based on the Finnish Meteorological Institute's (FMI) and Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute's (SMHI) daily ice charts of the Baltic Sea from several winters. These charts include e. g. ice thickness, ice concentration and degree of ridging. The main interest in wind turbine design is whether the area in question is drifting ice area or landfast ice area. In addition, maximum ice thicknesses with certain return periods were calculated by a new objective method of the extreme value analysis. The aim was to determine the realistic ice condition estimates for decision making concerning the sites of the turbines and for optimizing the structural design.
