Numerical Simulation for Ice-Truss Offshore Structure Interactions with Cohesive Zone Model

Abstract: As hydrocarbon exploration activities within Arctic and sub-Arctic areas increase, existing design rules have to be reviewed and improved to develop not only safe but capital-efficient implementation for offshore platforms. The cohesive zone model (CZM) is one of the FEM fracture techniques thathas been used to investigate ice-structure interaction behavior. Most research methodologies adopt CZM technology to model ice fracture behavior, focusing on classic and succinct scopes such as a unit structural column penetrated by an ice sheet. This study extends the possibility of CZM exploitation to both complex and realistic contact scenario models and has achieved results sufficient to qualitatively compare influences from interested parameters in terms of topologies of contact interfaces and approaching speeds of ice. Taking the advantage of the CZM technique, it can have substantial benefits to the marine and energy industries by developing or improving the design rules forthose platforms deployed in iceinfested regions.
